Bio & Miscellaneous

Throughout my life I have followed a few career paths, all related and, I feel, a natural extension of each other.

While working as graphic design in and around New York City, I began to greatly admire the work of professional photographers with whom I worked. I decided to pursue photography and attended a few evening classes at a local community college (Nassau Community College) to explore it further and possbily build up a portfolio of work. Next I attended Ohio University to study photography and graduated with an MFA.

Since I could teach with an MFA, I tried my hand at teaching and did that for 6 years. I enjoyed teaching but wanted to move to a bigger city. When I couldn't find a full-time teaching position at a desired geographic location, I moved to Chicago. After freelancing in design and photography (but mostly design) and a few full-time staff positions, I began working at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 1998 as a freelancer and was hired as a full-time staff member in 1999.

I design and art direct periodicals and newsletters and a large variety of collateral materials. For most of my career I've worked with teams which included other designers, editors, photographers and production personnel. I've also, at times, taken on all those roles by myself.

I've done a fair amount of pro bono work in Chicago including work for the Marwen Foundation, Lakeview Action Coalition and The Chicago Area Runners Association.

My specialty areas include both print and digital design, production, art direction, website design and development, branding and photography. I established and directed a design intern program in Northwestern Memorial Hospital's Department of Communication.

I've designed periodicals, brochures, logos, street banners, posters, table tents, tee shirts and ads, among other things. My software experience includes Quark Xpress, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Bridge and Dreamweaver. I have extensive experience in typography and photo retouching and am developing knowledge and experience in Web site design and development and some multimedia applications.

I have had a broad range of experience in writing and editing throughout my career. The quality editors with whom I've worked greatly have enhanced my learning.
